A business card that is remembered

A business card that is remembered
The digital age offers countless ways to introduce yourself and your company, but the most important thing stays the same: direct contact from person to person. Face-to-face meetings are what build trust and real business relationships. When you hand a printed business card to a customer, partner or supplier, you leave a professional, considered impression. That small gesture shows you care about detail and are ready to work together. Often it is exactly the extra step that makes you memorable and opens the way to bigger results.
The psychology of design: colour, contrast, typeface and other suitable elements
Design affects how a person perceives information and how quickly they understand the message. On a business card there is little space, so every element has to serve a clear purpose. Below are the main principles for designing good business cards.
The psychology of business card design is the deliberate use of colour, contrast and typeface to shape how the brand’s personality and the business are perceived. Colour is central here. Colour is a silent means of communication. Some examples of how colours are perceived and where they can be used:
- Blue creates trust and stability – suits medical, financial and technology companies.
- Red brings out energy and passion, and also stimulates appetite – suits creative brands, the food sector and sales.
- Black and white emphasise elegance, simplicity and authority. They always suit luxury products.
- Orange and yellow stand for joy, sun and optimism. They suit lifestyle businesses, products aimed at young people, food service and transport. Orange and yellow also signal special offers.
- Green is the colour of sustainability and nature. Linked to health, wealth and environmental awareness, it calms and emphasises trust, suiting agricultural, health and eco-friendly brands.
Colours should be chosen according to brand identity and target group, and the cultural context should be considered too.
Contrast is a design principle that emphasises differences between visual elements, such as size, colour, shape or brightness. Contrast increases readability. If the card holder’s name or phone number disappears into the colours, the card does not do its job. Dark text on a light background gives strong contrast and is a safe choice. Avoid light text on a light background, dark text on a dark background, and with a coloured background make sure the tones of text and background are not too similar.
The typeface carries the brand’s character.
The main font categories:
- Serif fonts (e.g. Times New Roman): small “tails” at the ends of the letters. They create a classic, trustworthy and formal feel.
- Sans-serif fonts (e.g. Helvetica, Poppins): clean, straight letters. They suit contemporary design.
- Decorative fonts: use only as accents. Text that must be readable (name, phone, email) should always be in a clear, straight font.
Too many different fonts make the card confusing. Use at most two typefaces – one for the company or personal name, the other for contact details. Given the size of a business card, usually only one typeface is used.
For a business card choose a type size of 10–12 pt. The absolute minimum in print is 8 pt, but even that can be hard for many people to read.
What information goes on a company business card? Only the information a person needs to know about your work or company straight away. Anything extra creates confusion.
Main information:
- First name and surname
- Job title
- Company name
- Phone number
- Website
Optional but useful:
- Logo
- Address – the shop or office address, or the registered address.
- Social media accounts
- A QR code for saving the details to a phone quickly.
- Icons – small visuals that help information to be understood faster
Better left off:
- Descriptions of services
- A long mission statement or slogan
- Irrelevant or outdated information (a fax number)
Negative space – the empty area on the card – is as important as the text itself.
- Leave enough room around the name, title and contact details.
- Avoid piling elements into one corner.
- A clear layout helps the eye find the right lines quickly.
The right paper and special finishes for your brand position
Touching and looking at a material activates senses that stay idle when information comes from a screen. When choosing a material, think about both the visual and the technical needs. If you work outdoors, for example, a waterproof material is worth choosing. For an environmentally friendly image, choose paper made from 100% recycled fibre. Most of the time, though, classic white business card board is right. Business cards are made from board of 300 g to 600 g.
Paper also directly affects the printed colour. Uncoated paper makes colours matt and softer, while coated paper gives a brighter, higher-contrast result. With coloured or dark paper, remember that the paper’s own tone shows through the print and affects the colour. On dark paper it is therefore worth using foil or white ink to keep the card readable. Print cannot be compared with the image on a computer screen unless it is a designer’s calibrated monitor.
Durability and a special effect can be added with lamination: gloss laminate suits colourful designs, matt laminate gives a softer, professional result, and soft-touch creates a velvety feel. These surfaces can be complemented with spot UV varnish or foil (gold, silver, black), which lifts key elements such as the logo or name. Textured paper should not be laminated, because the film does not sit evenly on its surface and can trap air bubbles.

Sizes and formats
The right format affects both the printing cost and practicality.
- 90 × 50 mm is the most common size. It is slightly narrower and suits minimalist design. Thanks to its dimensions it makes optimal use of paper in print.
- An alternative is 85 × 55 mm, the same size as a bank card, but not a particularly convenient format for printing.
- Square business cards, mini formats and folded cards attract more attention and allow a more creative approach (for example logo on one side, contacts on the other), but may not fit well in a wallet or in business card holders.
If you want the card to be distinctive but still practical, choose a size that fits standard business card pockets.

- Allow for longer lead times when using special materials, lamination or special finishes, or if the print file does not meet the quality requirements.
Measurable effect: a good business card brings replies
According to research, a professionally designed and printed business card noticeably raises a company’s credibility. Customers remember a company better when its card feels solid and well made in the hand.
A well-designed card with good contrast and a clear message can, for example, raise the follow-up rate of contacts by 20–30%.
A business card is not just a carrier of information – it is a miniature advertising tool that speaks for your company even when you are not in the room.
